Course Overview and Target Audience

This is an ASMBS course designed for non-physicians, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, who are interested in refining their skills and competency  in caring for the Gastric Band patient. This course also provides an overview of the comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the management of the Gastric Band patient through the ASMBS credentialing guidelines. This course features a hands-on band adjustments skills station set up for participants to practice adjustments on gastric band ports.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the credentialing guidelines for gastric band adjustments
  • Differentiate and describe the scope of practices for band adjustment procedures
  • Identify the Global Credentialing Requirements  for performing band adjustments
  • Discuss band adjustment strategies for success weight loss
  • Discuss nutrition and physical activities guidelines with gastric band patients
  • Discuss short, long term, and potential complications of gastric band
  • Demonstrate band adjustments skills
