Course Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the roles and goals of each member of the multidisciplinary team with regards to bariatric surgery
  • Identify how the the differences in these team members’ goals could affect the multidisciplinary team approach to evaluating bariatric surgery candidates
  • Discuss some of the medical issues that historically have been absolute contraindications and how they present in the current realm of bariatrics
  • Discuss the degree of nutritional noncompliance and when it should be an absolute contraindication
  • Discuss the need for pre-operative weight loss in preparing a patient for bariatric surgery
  • Identify psychosocial barriers and conditions and discuss how they may predicate postoperative safety and success or failure
